Our Journey
The British Tamil Medical Association (BTMA) was founded on 24th February 2021 with a vision to support and unite the British Tamil community in medicine. Starting with just 7 members, we embarked on this journey with a deep commitment to fostering connections and providing mentorship. Over time, we have grown a vibrant community of over 3,000 followers on social media and built partnerships with British Tamil doctors across various specialities.
As interest and demand increased, we expanded our team from its original 7 to 42 core members. Our expanded network includes resident doctor representatives across NHS trusts and a growing consultant faculty, allowing us to reach more people across the UK. Through rigorous recruitment, we’ve also introduced university representatives and sixth form ambassadors who help us connect with aspiring medical students at every stage of their journey.
Our expanding team has enabled us to launch a variety of programs tailored to meet the needs of our community. For aspiring medical students, we offer UCAT workshops, mock MMI, and interview sessions. For medical students and resident doctors, our events include speciality training application guidance and a UKMLA lecture series. We’ve also launched new initiatives like the "Med in Tamil" series, talks on men’s mental health, and a podcast, each aimed at breaking barriers and expanding opportunities.
Now officially registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC), we’re excited to continue this journey and create an even greater impact. With events like our annual charity week, which includes a ball, games, and sports, we celebrate our growing community. As we look to the future, we are grateful for everyone’s support and are committed to building an empowering space for British Tamil medical professionals and aspiring students alike.
